January 14th – Richard Herout, Beekeeper – Herout’s Honey
“Beekeeping” Rich has been a beekeeper for 8 years and although the environment has many problems and the bees are suffering from it, he is working to improve their world and ours. He will demonstrate how bees are kept, how the honey is collected, extracted and bottled for the consumer, and what some of the uses for honey are. Honey will be available for purchase at our meeting.

February 11th – Grant Jones, ISA Certified Arborist, Davey Tree
“Cultural Practices for Your Trees and Shrubs” Grant has been one of our most popular speakers and will once again be available for questions after his presentation. He will cover the drought but also include information on pruning, planting, and mulching.
March 11th – Linda “Rocklady” Neargarder, President, Olive Branch Stone & Garden Center
“Using Hardscape in Your Landscape” Linda will cover the use of hardscape to enhance your property, the latest trends in landscaping, what products to use to achieve the desired results and will also answers questions from the floor.
April 8th - Charlotte Adelman, Author - “The Midwest Native Garden”
Charlotte and her husband Bernhard L. Schwartz, both retired lawyers have become prairie enthusiasts, supporters and experts on plants that are native to the Midwest and have written a popular new book called The Midwest Native Garden. The premise of this book is to encourage gardeners to never plant anything in their garden that wasn’t here before we were because native plants nurture the native wildlife, such as the insects and birds that are also native to our area. Her book will be available for purchase at the meeting.
May 13th - Sarah Surroz, Conservation Manager, Conserve Lake County
“Savvy Garden, Savvy Lawn: How Smart Americans are Saving the Planet While Also Saving Time and Money” Learn how gardeners are celebrating and protecting their local natural heritage while increasing the value of their properties and investing in cost-saving and time-saving elements. Simple ways to become a greener gardener will be highlighted. Thousands of Americans are now incorporating earth-friendly features into beautiful landscapes. Sarah has been working on land and water conservation projects in Lake County for over 23 and has a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management from the University of Wisc. Her yard is officially recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat and is also certified through Conserve Lake County’s Conservation at Home program. Also, learn how your garden can be certified through her organization.

September 9th - Veggie Tasting and The Gardens of Cornwall by Andy Plasz .This program covers the flora of Cornwall England. Cornwall is the peninsula on the southwestern corner of England. It has a mild climate due to the warm ocean currents. It starts out in the village of Port Issac, and on to the gardens of St. Michels Mount , Trevarno, The National Museum of Gardening, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a walk from Mousehole to Penzance, and concludes with a trip to the Eden Project the worlds largest bio dome system and finally a look at the moors.
October 14th – University of Illinois Extension Office Master Gardener - “Ornamental Grasses” We will learn about one of the fastest growing trends in gardening, ornamental grasses. She will talk about how to grow them, and how they can be used in the garden. A number of different grass species will be featured.
